Programming
Alice is a very cool project that allows students to use a drag-and-drop system to learn how to write java code. Basically, the program writes the actual code, so that students can concentrate more on learning the logic, and less on the sytax. The program comes stocked with a multitude of 3D images for students to choose from (because learning how to use a 3D modeling program is not easy!) and even a network of users.
Gamestar Mechanic is a very cool program that uses a video game to teach students how to create a video game! It even has a gallery area, where students create their own games, and then share them with a large network of other students playing and creating! It is a very good way to get students interested in computer programming.
Typing
This website has a few typing games available. Some of them are a bit childish, but there are a few that could be useful for high-school students.
Video Game Design
This website is sort of a free online college-type course that teaches about video game design and programming. There are free e-books, tutorials, videos, and more! It also talks about free software. This course was designed with both the beginner and the "kind-of-know-it" learner.
